‘Tough to evict illegal occupants in Bangalore University hostels’

October 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - Bengaluru:

Evicting “students” overstaying at its hostels has become a tricky affair for Bangalore University (BU), with the varsity resorting to measures including installation of CCTV cameras to tackle the problem. University officials also said the warden and social welfare officials have even received threats for trying to remove illegal occupants.

Students are offering various kinds of excuses to stay on in the hostels, said BU Vice-Chancellor B. Thimme Gowda after the meeting of the Syndicate here on Tuesday. “Some say they are pursuing postgraduate diploma in non-professional courses for which there are no facilities,” he said.

K.K. Seethamma, Registrar (Administration), BU, said at least 10 such overstaying students were evicted from the girls’ hostel during a recent drive. “We allotted the rooms to other students to ensure that they don’t come back,” she added. However, the problem is far from solved in the boys’ hostel, which has “students” who have been guests for years on end.

Meanwhile, Prof. Gowda also said the proposal to establish the ‘Sitaram Jindal School of Economics’, was passed by the Syndicate.
