The Madiwala police have arrested a senior software engineer who under the influence of alcohol drove his car in a rash and negligent manner and ran over two pedestrians, including a woman, in the early hours of Saturday. The accused has been identified as Baljit Singh, project manager, Wipro.

Madivala police arrested him on Saturday morning under the section death due to negligence and remanded him to judicial custody.

The accident took place in Madivala traffic police station limits around 12.45 a.m. Baljit, a resident of Kasuvanahalli, was returning home after a party in his Tata Manza car in an inebriated state and allegedly mowed down two persons near Sarjapur Road.

V. Mala, (42), a housewife, was killed on the spot and another pedestrian identified as Chennapillappaya (48) succumbed to his injuries at St. John’s Hospital. The two, residents of Kaikondanahalli, were returning home from a church in the area, police said.

Baljit knocked down the duo and crushed them to death before his car came to a halt. Passers-by immediately rushed the victims to hospital where the doctors declared them as brought dead.

The locals nabbed Baljit who was trying to escape from the scene and handed him over to the police.

“The accused was taken for medical test where he was found drunk over permissible level. On Saturday we took him into custody and have slapped charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against him,” said a police officer.
