Armed bikers allegedly attacked and robbed a software engineer while he was returning home from work on his bicycle early on Thursday morning.

The victim, Ajay Gupta, a resident of K.R. Puram, works as an analyst at an IT company on Bannerghatta Road, the police said. He had finished his night shift and was cycling back home when he was attacked.

While passing through Johnson Market at 3 a.m., he noticed two bikers closing in on him. “Sensing trouble, Mr. Gupta looked behind to see what was happening when one of the men attacked him with a machete,” said the police.

Mr. Gupta lost his balance and hit an electric pole. As soon as he fell, the two approached him. They snatched his bag that had his mobile phone, debit and credit cards, company ID and bike registration booklet, and sped away.

With the help of passers-by, Mr. Gupta approached the Ashok Nagar police and filed a complaint. “We are trying to track the accused down through the CCTV footage from in and around the area,” said the police.
