The third Vijyoshi camp, an annual science event conducted by the Department of Science and Technology, was inaugurated here on Saturday.

The three-day event, which is organised by members or fellows of the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) and the Inspire programme, brings together students from undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes from the science, engineering and medical streams, and provides them an opportunity to interact with the best scientific minds from across the country and abroad. The programme aims at inspiring future scientists.

Milestone

The inaugural address was delivered by the inspiring and iconic scientist and honorary president of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, C.N. Rao.

In a talk that focussed on chemistry, he pointed out, that 2011 was a particularly significant year, as a century ago, scientists had made the breakthrough discovery of the structure of the atom. He took students through a presentation that captured the milestones in chemistry since then.

Prof. Rao told students there was a lot to learn from great minds. “If you want to achieve anything in science, you must think differently.”

Participants at the three-day seminar, being conducted at the Indian Institute of Science, include KVPY fellows, and students of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, the Indian Institute of Technology and the University of Hyderabad's basic science programmes. In all, around 600 students are taking part.
