Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division) G. Ramesh has been indicted in the CID report on the violent clash between lawyers for his failure to control the situation despite prior intelligence reports. The report was submitted to the Home Department by DGP-CID Rupak Kumar Dutta on Tuesday. Mr. Dutta was appointed by the State government to investigate the matter.

Warnings ignored

Highly placed sources in the Home Ministry told The Hindu the report states that Mr. Ramesh ignored intelligence reports warning of large-scale violence and did not deploy sufficient personnel on the ground in advance. The report also found that given the gravity of the intelligence report, DCP Ramesh was not present on the spot to supervise the bandobast. He landed at the City Civil Court only after matters had already gone out of hand.

Sources also said in the absence of a senior officer to oversee the riot control operations, some junior policemen went berserk and committed grave excesses. The report cites video footage showing police excesses to arrive at this conclusion. However, the footage was not of the kind of quality required to identify the erring policemen.

Transferred

Meanwhile, the Director-General office issued a press release on the transfer of Assistant Commissioner of Police (Ulsoor Gate division) K.N. Jitendranath. The City Civil Court premises fall within the jurisdiction of this ACP.

According to the release, Mr. Jitendranath has been transferred to the City Crime Branch (CCB), with immediate effect, while B.N. Nyamegowda from the CCB will replace him.
