Intervening in a drunken brawl proved costly for a constable, who was assaulted while trying to negotiate peace between two friends on Inner Ring Road in Domlur on Friday night.
Assistant Constable Murugappa Sintri, driver of a Pink Hoysala, and Head Constable Mallayya, attached to Halasuru police patrol team, received a complaint about the two people fighting on the road around 11.45 p.m.
The police team of Murugappa and Mallayya reached the spot. They found two men exchanging blows and punches near Parvathi bar while passers-by were watching.
Murugappa tried to pacify them, but one of the men, later identified as Kiran, attacked him. Murugappa sustained internal injuries and collapsed on the ground.
With the help of passers-by, Mallayya pinned down Kiran and took him to the police station. Murugappa was taken to a near-by hospital for treatment.
Inquiries revealed that Kiran is a resident of Domlur. He had got into a brawl with a friend Raju.
Kiran was booked under Sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) of the IPC and remanded in judicial custody on Saturday.
