The city police has opposed the grant of bail to French Consulate official Pascal Mazurier, who has been in judicial custody since June 19 after it was alleged he raped his three-and-half-year-old daughter.
The Public Prosecutor representing the police submitted the objections to a local court here on Wednesday.
The police opposed bail on four grounds.
First, they conveyed their apprehension that being an influential man, Mr. Mazurier might attempt to tamper with evidence or use his connections to leave India and escape prosecution. Second, the investigation is at a nascent stage and without detailed depositions from witnesses, it would be dangerous to free Mr. Mazurier. Third, Baptist Hospital doctors, who found evidence of rape, have not yet been questioned properly and their statements have not been recorded.
Fourth, the results of the DNA and other forensic rests are yet to come and it would be premature to grant bail to the accused at this stage.
The matter has been posted for Thursday.
