Not-so-sweet surprise for K.C. Das Sweets

May 01, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - Bengaluru:

It was a bitter pill to swallow for K.C. Das Sweets shop on St. Mark’s Road. The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Thursday sealed the outlet for not disposing garbage as per the norms.

The BBMP health team inspected four establishments – Empire Hotel on Church Street, Koshy’s on St. Mark’s Road, Chancery Hotel on Lavelle Road and K.C. Das Sweets on St. Mark’s Road.

According to a BBMP health official, who was part of the raid, the K.C. Das outlet had not heeded to the notices issued earlier. The garbage generated by the outlet was neither segregated nor handed over to the empanelled contractors who collect waste from bulk generators.

However, BBMP officials allowed the reopening of the outlet after its representatives gave an undertaking that they would follow the garbage disposal rules and hand it over to the empanelled contractors from Saturday.

The officials added that a fine of Rs. 2 lakh was levied on Chancery Hotel for not segregating the waste generated and for not having a designated smoking zone.

“We also inspected the other establishments and found that they were following the norms. Such inspections will continue over the next week,” an official told The Hindu .

The official said that any establishment that generates more than 10 kg of garbage a day is classified as a bulk generator.

As per the solid waste management rules, these bulk generators are expected to not just segregate the waste but also only hand it over to the empanelled contractors after signing an agreement with them.

BBMP administrator T.M. Vijay Bhaskar said the civic body would also cancel the trade licences of establishments that were not following the solid waste management rules.
