Any move by the city traffic police to book jaywalkers had been scuttled with a rhetorical response of the lack of pedestrian facilities on the city's roads. But this cannot be the argument any more on TenderSURE roads, designed with the primary focus on pedestrians, say cops.

The city traffic police have decided to book jaywalkers on St. Mark's Road and Vittal Mallya Hospital Road, the two TenderSURE roads inaugurated recently. This will be extended to all TenderSURE roads once they are completed as a principle, traffic cops said.

“The pedestrians cannot complain of lack of facilities on these roads. They need to be responsible as well. We will start booking jaywalkers on these streets henceforth,” said M A Saleem, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic).

The TenderSURE roads have been in the eye of the storm for reduction in the carriageway and providing a wider pedestrian pathway. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently said that the government would go for 50 more roads with TenderSURE, with a rider that the pedestrian pathway may have to be reduced. V Ravichandar, one of the initial promoters of TenderSURE roads, defended the existing design saying it focuses on pedestrians.

The decision to start booking jaywalkers on the two TenderSURE roads follows a special drive to book jaywalkers on Hosur Road in the light of numerous accidents involving pedestrians. Since June 16, they have booked 321 persons for jaywalking on Hosur Road.
