Ahead of the process to select the new Vice-Chancellor of National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore, students have put forth their concerns.
A statement of the Student Bar Association (SBA) on Thursday has raised a wide range of issues, primarily cultivating high-quality research and appointment of permanent faculty.
“At present, out of 47 teachers, NLSIU has only 13 teachers in permanent positions. It goes without saying that the present situation, where more than 70% of the teachers are in temporary positions, amounts to neglecting the applicable norms laid down by the University Grants Commission,” the statement said.
In addition, they have stressed on the need for international faculty members and professors with credentials to teach in foreign universities.
Referring to the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings, the SBA said NLSIU was ranked eighth among Indian law schools in the category of 'Research Productivity & Impact (RPI)’ with zero faculty citations and less than five research-based publications.
The association has said that the new Vice Chancellor should encourage faculty members, research scholars and students to publish articles in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals, among others, by attracting external funding for longitudinal research projects and putting into place rigorous processes for research supervision.
