A 23-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday night on charges of raping his neighbour, a minor aged 14, in Kengeri who was found pregnant.

The minor girl’s family got to know she was five months pregnant after a medical test. She had been complaining of stomach ache and had fainted a week earlier. She apparently revealed to her family that the person responsible for her condition was their neighbour. He had allegedly been abusing her for the last five months. The girl’s mother then filed a complaint with the Kengeri police.

According to the police, the accused regularly visited the minor’s house. He was also well acquainted with her mother. The girl is the only child. Nearly two months ago, the girl reportedly realised she was pregnant, but did not reveal this to her family. She had also stopped going to school. Quoting the girl, the police said the accused allegedly threatened against revealing her pregnancy. The girl who was also sent to Vani Vilas hospital for examination, was later taken to NIMHANS for counselling, said the police.

The girl’s aunt told reporters she suspected that the accused had taken advantage of her sister’s absence at home to abuse the victim.

The accused, who was absconding since Monday evening, was eventually traced on Tuesday and arrested. A case of rape under Section 376 of the IPC has been booked against him.
