In a joint operation with the Assam police, the West Division police on Friday nabbed a 24-year-old militant belonging to the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) from a lodge in Majestic.

According to the police, Birkhang Basumatry alias Burlong Buttur, from Chirang in Assam, is a self-styled area commander in Kokhrajar district of Assam.

He was allegedly involved in the killing of eight Adivasis at Lungsung on December 23 and six Hindi-speaking persons at Serfanguri in Kokrajhar district of Assam on January 16 last year, and has been on the run since then.

Based on a tip-off received from their Assam counterparts, a team tracked him down and arrested him from a lodge in Majestic area. He had checked in just a few hours before he was arrested.

“After being tipped off that he was staying in a lodge in the city, we started scrutinising every lodge in Majestic and surrounding areas. We picked up a suspect from one of the lodges. Photographs mailed by the Assam police helped us confirm his identity,” a senior police officer said.
