Residents of Mandur on Sunday staged a protest against dumping of waste at the landfill during the day on Saturday by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike.

Locals and BBMP had entered into an agreement according to which the civic agency would dump garbage in the landfill there only between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. But 30 truckloads of garbage were dumped in the Mandur landfill on Saturday afternoon. Residents, upset that the BBMP authorities were violating the consensus agreement, staged a ‘rasta roko’ and staged a demonstration in Mandur on Sunday.

Gopal Rao, a resident, said police officials convened a peace meeting between BBMP officials and Mandur residents on Sunday afternoon. The BBMP officials apologised for dumping the garbage in the Mandur landfill during the day and promised not to violate the time frame for dumping garbage.

Then, residents withdrew the protest. Dumping of garbage resumed from Sunday night.

Mr. Rao reiterated that they would not allow dumping of garbage in Mandur from December 1.
