The Cybercrime police have arrested a man from Nelamangala for allegedly sharing a video link of the Kannada film Pailwaan on social media on the day of its release.

The film’s producer had lodged a complaint alleging piracy.

According to the police, Rakesh Virat had posted the link on his Facebook page and shared it with two of his friends, allowing them to download the film. “He had also asked those interested in watching the film to send him a message and promised to share the link with them,” said the police, who have seized his mobile phone.

The police, however, are still to probe the source of the link and how Rakesh got hold of it as he is not part of the film unit. Sources suspect that he may have known someone in the film team, or he may have hacked an internal communication of the film team to access the link. “We are probing to know if this is a one-off incident or if he is part of a larger organised network that profits from piracy,” said a police officer.
