A young electrician was electrocuted at Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) on Thursday night when he was tutoring new recruits on the working of some power lines near the runway. The family of the deceased staged a protest demanding appropriate compensation and immediate action against his contractor.
Police sources identified the victim as Madan Kumar Munikrishna (20), a resident of Kadayarapanahalli near the airport. He was hired on contract in July 2014 by Vasuki Electrical Company, which handles electrical work at the airport.
The accident took place around 10 p.m. He suffered an electric shock and was thrown away when he touched a wire to demonstrate disconnection of a line. He lost consciousness. Co-workers rushed him to Ramaiah Memorial Hospital on the airport premises. However, he could not be saved. An electrical short circuit is suspected to have caused the accident.
On Friday morning, his family and relatives gathered outside the airport and protested urging swift police action against the contactor alleging negligence. They also demanded compensation to Munikrishna’s parents. Senior police officers reached the spot and pacified the protestors who dispersed after being assured that their demands will be met. International Airport police registered a case under Section 304 A (causing death by negligence) of the IPC on Thursday night and the body was handed over to his family following a post-mortem, sources added.
