A 38-year-old man battling alcoholism was allegedly tied up and beaten to death at a privately-run de-addiction and rehabilitation centre in H.B.R. Layout on Tuesday when he turned violent.

The deceased, Faheem Shariff, had been admitted to the de-addiction centre attached to Ashrafia Masjid by his family on Saturday. The distraught family have told the police that the in-charge of the centre and a few others had chained Shariff before beating him with rods and PVC pipes. The Hennur police have registered a case of murder. They have arrested the in-charge of the centre Innayat and are searching for Khalid who heads the centre.

Shariff was admitted to the centre on August 26 at 8.30 p.m. On Tuesday, his brother called to enquire about him, but could not reach Khalid. Later around 8 p.m., the family was informed that Shariff had blacked out and was being taken to a hospital.

When family members rushed to the centre, they found out that Shariff had died. It was only while they were preparing for the final rites did they notice severe bruises on his body.
