Man arrested on cheating charge

State president of the Dalit Samrajya Sthapana Samiti M.D. Narayan has been arrested for allegedly cheating people from lower income groups by collecting lakhs of rupees after promising that he would get houses allotted for them under Rajiv Awas Yojana at Dibbur village.

According to the police, Narayan showed unsuspecting people a letter which he claimed authorised him to allot 57 out of 1,200 houses built under the yojana at Dibbur. He allegedly demanded ₹2 lakh per house and told the “beneficiaries” to send a demand draft for ₹28,600 to the Commissioner, Slum Development Board, and give the remaining amount to him in cash. After he collected ₹15 lakh from villagers, he locked up his office at Sharadadevinagar and fled, said the police.

He had similarly collected ₹10 lakh from residents of Kalkere village in Malur taluk of Kolar, the police said. Following a complaint, the police have arrested Narayan.
