Supporting the Women's Reservation Bill, members of Bharatiya Muslim Mahila Andolan staged a dharna in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue here on M.G. Road on Monday.
They condemned those opposed to the participation of Muslim women in politics. Andolan secretary Noorjehan Safia Niaz said the Women's Reservation Bill, which was passed in the Rajya Sabha, would provide an opportunity for women to participate in politics.
“We want it to be passed in the Lok Sabha too. We also want internal quota for women from backward classes, including Muslims, in the 33 per cent reservation,” she said.
Ms. Niaz said that the andolan condemned the view of some religious leaders who are opposed to the participation of Muslim women in politics.
“They say that Muslim women should only ‘create' leaders but not become leaders themselves. We believe that Islam permits Muslim women's participation in social, economical and political spheres of the country,” she added.
Later, they submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa.
