Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has upped security measures in the wake of the bomb blast on Church Street and the upcoming Republic Day later this month.

Though the airport has not received any official communiqué about the possibility of a 1999-style hijack of an Air India plane – the communication was sent in particular to airports at Delhi and Kolkata on Sunday – officials in Bengaluru are taking no chances.

“The airport has been on high alert mode for some time, but following the Church Street blast, we have upped the screenings and checking. Nakabandis around the airport has been activated, while checking of cars has been increased,” said an official.

The airport manager of a leading airline said the existing four levels of security ensured that passengers will not be able to bring prohibited substances on board aircraft. Moreover, said the manager, security checks of the flight were being conducted as per protocol.

Airport officials said there is enough manpower to ensure that there is no delay for passengers.
