A model generic drug store that will also function as a 24/7 pharmacy for multi-brand medicines will soon be inaugurated at the K.C. General Hospital in Malleswaram.

Health Minister U.T. Khader told presspersons on Monday that the store — Janasanjeevani — would be thrown open to the public by May-end. “This will be a model store for the entire State. In the next three months, we will have one such store in every district,” the Minister said. Stating that the store will have more than 1,000 generic drugs, Mr. Khader said, “The State Drugs and Logistics Society has got a software upgrade that will enable the chemist to look for the generic name of a branded drug, if prescribed by the doctor.”

The new units will also help address drug stock-out issues in hospitals.

“In case there is an emergency and the hospital has run out of stock, they can use medicines from these outlets,” he said. It can be accessed by patients as well as outsiders. Generic drugs will be available at 50 per cent to 60 per cent discount and branded drugs at a concession of 15 per cent to 20 per cent. The government had entered into an agreement with HLL Lifecare Ltd. to establish the drug stores, the Minister added.
