IT employee, cab driver die in accident on airport road

Cab was hit from behind, pushed over the divider and was hit by oncoming truck

A 27-year-old IT professional and a cab driver lost their lives in an accident on Venkatachala elevated flyover on the road to the airport during the early hours of Monday.

The deceased have been identified as Akanksha Gupta, a native of Uttar Pradesh, and cab driver Swamy, a resident of Chamaraj Nagar.

According to the police, Akanksha had returned to the city after a visit to her home town. After landing at the airport, she booked a cab and was heading towards the city when a car hit the vehicle from behind. The impact was such that the cab jumped the divider. Once on the other side of the road, the cab was hit by an oncoming garbage truck.

While Swamy died on the spot, Akanksha was rushed to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to injuries.

After the impact, the car had overturned and the five people inside had sustained minor injuries.

The Yelahanka traffic police took the driver of the car, Venkatesh, 36, into custody and seized the vehicle. A senior police officer said that Venkatesh claimed to have lost control of his vehicle.

Traffic on the busy flyover was disrupted for more than an hour till the police cleared the route.
