Irregular BMTC bus service irks Kanakanagar residents

November 28, 2011 10:18 am | Updated 10:18 am IST - BANGALORE:

Are Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus drivers plying to and from Kanakanagar and V. Nagenahalli, off R.T. Nagar, playing truant?

Irked bus commuters from the areas are convinced that BMTC buses deployed to cater to them are skipping the trips assigned to them.

V. Nagenahalli, just off Outer Ring Road, is connected to Shivajinagar, K.R. Market and Majestic by buses that go via R.T. Nagar and Kanakanagar. Although there are plenty of buses, hassled commuters claim they disappear in the afternoon during the shift change and after 9 p.m.

No timetable

Mehek M., student of Bishop Cotton Women's College, said that she often goes late to class because of irregular BMTC services. “The buses are so irregular that commuters do not know the correct timetable of services. I often miss the bus,” she said.

Buses perform a vanishing act in the afternoon and after 9 p.m., said Srijita Das, housewife from V. Nagenahalli. “I've to spend on autorickshaws because of unavailability of buses during off-peak hours from Shivajinagar,” she said. Tabassum Taj, student of Government High School, Mathadahalli, said that she normally spent 20 to 30 minutes at the Kanakanagar bus stop every day waiting for a bus. “I come to the bus stand at 8.30 a.m. even though my classes start at 10 a.m., because of uncertainty of services,” she said. And, buses are always overcrowded during peak hours, she rued.

BMTC Chief Traffic Manager (Operations) M.P. Prabhudas told The Hindu that he would look into these complaints.
