The Karnataka High Court on Monday asked the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to install at least 100 smart bins having a capacity to collect 1.5 tonnes of segregated solid waste in different parts of the city, and install another 2,000 litter bins in different commercial areas as early as possible.

The court also directed the BBMP to ensure that the litter bins are periodically and efficiently cleared without allowing the garbage to spill over.

A division bench comprising Justice B.S. Patil and Justice B.V. Nagarathna issued the directions during the hearing of PIL petitions related to the city’s garbage problems.

The court granted two weeks’ time to BBMP’s Joint Commissioner (Health and Solid Waste Management) Sarfaraz Khan to file an affidavit on action initiated after he stated that the process is under way.

Litter bins stolen

To a query by the bench on installation of litter bins, Mr. Khan said that about 2,000 litter bins were installed in different parts of the city, but around 500 were either damaged or stolen. He pointed out that action has been initiated against the culprits.

While directing the BBMP to install another 2,000 litter bins by June 29, the bench directed the BBMP to submit an action plan and a status report to the court in this regard by June 29, the next date of hearing.

Noting serious grievance with regard to legacy waste in the area where the Karnataka Compost Development Corporation (KCDC) plant has been established near HSR Layout resulting in serious health hazard, the bench directed the BBMP and the KCDC to expedite the process of removal of legacy waste.
