The Karnataka State Food Commission inspected a few fair price shops coming under the South zone on Friday.
During the inspection, according to a press release, commission chairperson N. Krishnamurthy and his team found a few shops distributing less rice than specified to ration card-holders, apart from taking extra money to sell products not listed under the Public Distribution System.
While each card holder is entitled to 7 kg of rice, the shopowners were giving only 5 kg.
The commission found discrepancies in the stock of rice in some fair price shops.
The release said that at Gowdanapalya, there was a shortage of 154.12 quintals of rice in the stock of two shops that were reportedly owned by one person.
At a shop in Thyagarajanagar, the shortage was 8.78 quintals.
Two fair price shops that were to open at 10 a.m. were closed when the commission went for an inspection around 10.30 a.m.
Ration card-holders at Gowdanapalya informed the commission that they had to pay ₹80 to ₹150 extra to purchase items not under the PDS.
Following the inspection, the commission has recommended action against these shopowners.
