The Karnataka High Court on Thursday enhanced the compensation to Rs. 5 lakh to be paid by a convict to the victim of an acid attack case.
Confirming the sentence of seven years’ rigorous imprisonment awarded to K.R. Prashanth by a Mysuru Sessions court, the High Court found the compensation of Rs. 50,000 awarded by the trial court was not sufficient to compensate the victim, Satish Bhat, who was a close friend of the convict.
A Division Bench, comprising Justice Mohan M. Shantanagoudar and Justice Budihal R.B., passed the order while dismissing the appeal filed by Prashanth questioning the trial court.
Prashanth had attempted to murder Satish using multiple means. The trouble started when Satish asked Prashanth to return the Rs. 4 lakh he had borrowed. On September 2, 2007, Prashanth called Satish to come along with him to Bannur. Prashanth stopped the car at Mallahalli and sprayed chilly powder on Satish’s face and later threw acid.
He also tried to run over Satish, who sustained burn injuries on his hand, chest and face.
The 3rd Additional Sessions Court, Mysuru, had on August 18, 2010, convicted him for attempt to murder and other charges.
