The High Court of Karnataka on Tuesday cautioned officials of the Education Department that it would not hesitate to send them to prison for not adhering to the court’s directions for granting English-medium status to eligible schools in terms of the law declared by it and the Supreme Court.
A Division Bench comprising Justice N. Kumar and Justice B. Sreenivase Gowda orally warned the officials when there was no clarity on the actions initiated by the State on the applications filed by the schools seeking grant of English-medium status.
Later, the Bench asked government counsel to submit details by evening.
The Bench was hearing a batch of contempt of court petitions filed by various associations of school managements and individual schools alleging non-grant of English-medium status.
In the evening, government counsel told the court that around 1,300 applications filed by the schools for grant of English-medium status were disposed of and sought time to get data from Kalaburagi and Dharwad zones.
Following this plea, the Bench adjourned further hearing till June 25.
