A 20-year-old security guard died after falling from the fifth floor of a residential apartment at Kaggadasapura on Tuesday. Durga Acharya was a guard at KMR Nest Apartment. He was supervising the repair of lift that was stuck when he fell, said the police.

“There was a small gap adjacent to the lift that for ventilation purposes. Instead of a metal grille, it had been covered with a plastic sheet. While trying to open the door of the lift, the guard stepped on the plastic sheet and fell from a height of 55 feet to the ground floor,” said a police officer.

Residents took him to a hospital where the doctors declared him as brought dead.

A relative of the guard, Yuvray, filed a complaint with the police alleging negligence by the owner of the building. The gap should have been covered with a mesh and a metal grille, she alleged in her police complaint.

The Baiyappanahalli police have taken up a case of death due to negligence against Nagraj Reddy, owner of the building. No arrest has been made so far.
