Goseva Ayoga abolished

October 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - BENGALURU:

In a significant decision, the Karnataka Cabinet on Wednesday abolished the Goseva Ayoga (Cattle Conservation Commission), which had been constituted when the BJP was in power in 2012.

The commission’s primary task was enforcing a ban on cow slaughter and protecting cattle.

It may be recalled that the previous BJP government had also tried to usher in a stringent law, banning slaughter of all categories of cattle and introducing strong penal provisions, to replace the pre-existing 1964 law. The proposal had been set aside by the Congress government, to revert to the old law.

The powers of the commission have now been transferred to the Animal Welfare Board of the Animal Husbandry Department.
