A gang of four, including a 48-year-old woman, were arrested on Tuesday by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) on the charge of supplying marijuana to inmates of Parappana Agrahara jail.

The CCB acted on a tip-off that the narcotic substance would be smuggled into the prison during Ganesh festival. Sleuths caught a person smuggling the contraband concealed in baskets of flowers meant for decoration of the Ganesha idol.Questioning the man led the police to Vennila Subramani (48), suspected kingpin of the racket. At her house in Anjinappa Garden in Cottonpet, they found 21 kg of ganja worth Rs. 3.2 lakh, two mobile phones and a car. Based on information provided by her, they arrested her husband Subramani and his associates Manjunath (33) and Vinod Kumar (27).

Inquiries revealed that the gang used to get the contraband from Nelagonda in Andhra Pradesh. “The gang had established a route to take ganja inside the prison,” R. Ramesh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime), said.

Investigations revealed that Vennila had built a multi-storey house worth Rs. 45 lakh. “However, she does not have any known source of income,” said Mr. Ramesh. The CCB would invoke various provisions under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act against the gang.
