Four men abducted a senior officer with the sub-registrar’s office on Thursday, blindfolded him, and held him for 10 hours before abandoning him on the outskirts with a warning that he ‘undo the injustice he caused to many people’.

The victim, Rangaswamy, 59, who is due to retire in 10 months, worked at the Shantinagar Sub-Registrar’s office and was returning home from work around 5.15 p.m. when he was attacked. He later told the police the men intercepted him in their car while he was waking towards the metro station. Before he could react, they shoved him into the car and sped away. “He recalled the attackers turning up the volume of the music system when he tried to call for help, and spraying something on his face before blindfolding him,” said the police.

They then forced him to call his family and inform them that he would be coming home late as he had made plans with a friend, and later took his cellphone away. According to the police, the gang were unhappy with Mr. Rangaswamy’s work. They allegedly instructed him to review all the people who had approached him in the recent past and ensure that their work was done, failing which they would harm him.

After driving the car around 10 hours, they dumped him on NICE Road and sped away at around 4 a.m. on Friday, With the help of passers-by, Mr. Ragaswamy reached home and narrated his ordeal. He was later admitted to a hospital and treated for shock and exhaustion.

A complaint was filed with the jurisdictional Wilson Garden police. “The victim did not give us any more information on the nature of the men’s demands. We will know the the exact reason only after we arrest the accused,” a senior police officer said.
