Residents of the Gandhinagar ward of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will vote on Sunday to elect their councillor.
Nine candidates are in the fray in the byelection, which was necessitated following the murder of councillor S. Nataraj. The constituency is known to be a Congress stronghold and the party is banking on the sympathy factor following Nataraj's death. There are 24,901 voters in the constituency. As many as 30 polling booths have been set up.
Police prepared
The police have made security arrangements to ensure peaceful polling. Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) T. Suneel Kumar told The Hindu that 400 officers, including four deputy commissioners of police and six assistant commissioners of police, would patrol the area during the polling hours. In addition to this, he said, six platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police would also be deployed in the area.
