An NRI businessman from Canada filed a complaint with the police after he discovered that foreign currency amounting to about ₹10.5 lakh had been stolen from his room at a star hotel on M.G. Road on Tuesday.

In his complaint, businessman Baba Sait Abdullah Asheem, 51, said he approached the jurisdictional Halasuru police station as he had not got a satisfactory response from the hotel management.

Mr. Asheem, who is in Bengaluru for his son’s engagement, had been staying in the hotel since April 6. He and his family members had booked two rooms. Mr. Asheem told the police he left the hotel on Tuesday and returned at 6.30 p.m. to find not only his cash missing, but also his Canadian driving licence, credit card, and health card.

In his complaint, Mr. Asheem said he had put a DND (do not disturb) sign on the door, but the hotel staff had ignored it to clean the room. The management later offered to waive his hotel expenses.

The police have taken up a case and obtained the CCTV camera footage to identify those who entered the room. “We are also questioning the staff,” said a police officer.
