The issue of lack of teachers in government schools and its impact on students was discussed at a State-level consultation meeting organised by the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) here on Thursday.
According to the KSCPCR, in 50,000 government schools in the State, around 5,500 teachers’ posts are laying vacant. Many of these schools do not have English, Maths and Science teachers.
Urging the government to fill the vacancies at the earliest, KSCPCR member Krupa Alva said the lack of teaching staff was adversely affecting students in schools. “As a result, the failure rates among government school students has gone up,” she said.
“In many areas such as Hyderabad-Karnataka, Mumbai- Karnataka regions higher percentage of students are failing in SSLC exams. Districts such as Raichur, Yadgir, and Koppal have poor literacy rates,” Ms. Alva added.
Y. Mariswamy, chairperson of KSCPCR, said: “The government should appoint teachers and fill the vacancies in all government schools. Instead of appointing guest teachers, the government should appoint permanent teachers.”
