Quick thinking by a BMTC bus driver helped avert what could have been a major accident here on Wednesday morning. Manjunath was driving down the busy Nrupatunga Road around 11 a.m. when he realised that the brakes were not functioning.

He alerted the passing motorists by honking furiously and then rammed the bus into a tree on the roadside. He sustained minor injuries in the process.

There were no passengers in the bus and it was going towards Shanti Nagar depot from Kempegowda Bus station for repair after it broke down on Sheshadri Road. “The driver’s quick thinking averted a disaster,” a senior police officer said.

Following the incident, traffic movement was disrupted for sometime on Nrupatunga Road.

The Halasuru traffic police personnel, who were are monitoring the signal, rushed to the spot and with the help of a private towing vehicle shifted the bus to allow free flow of traffic.

However, BMTC officials said that their initial investigation has revealed that there was no mechanical fault with the bus. “We are still looking into it,” an official said.
