The Tipu Sultan United Front has opposed the State government’s proposal to drop the Mysuru ruler’s name from textbooks and urged the government to continue to celebrate his birth anniversary.
Speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday, N.V. Narasimiah, vice-president of the front, said the government cannot remove Tipu from textbooks because an MLA demands it. He said: “When Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa was with Karnataka Janata Paksha, he participated in Tipu Sultan birth anniversary. Then Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar released a book on the ruler written by Sheikh Ali. He wrote a forward for the book.”
Mr. Narasimiah described the government’s move as “sentimental drama” to garner votes in the byelections.
Anniversary celebrations
President of the front, Sardar Ahmed Quereshi, said like-minded people will celebrate the birth anniversary near the Tipu Sultan Palace on November 10.
Meanwhile, in Mysuru, plans are being worked out to celebrate the birth anniversary at Bal Bhavan on November 10 without the State government’s involvement. Former Minister and Congress MLA Tanveer Sait has taken the lead to organise the event.
