A gang of men broke into Amrapali Fine Jewellers located near M.G. Square on Kasturba Road here on Sunday evening and made off with silver articles estimated at Rs. 5 lakh.
The CCTV footage of the heist has been recovered but the police claimed that the quality of the video is extremely poor.
In what has come as an embarrassment to the police, the jewellery shop is located less than 50 metres from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) and the Cubbon Park Assistant Commissioner of Police.
According to the police, the articles stolen were faux gold. “It was silver with gold coating,” sources in the police said. The more valuable diamonds and gold ornaments had been left untouched, they added.
According to a statement given to the police by the shop’s manager, he downed shutters around 7.30 p.m. The police believe that the break-in happened less than an hour after the shop was closed.
The security guard on duty told the police that he was guarding the shop from outside and did not hear any sound. The thieves are suspected to have entered the shop through a window.
