The system of hiring workers on contract in all urban local bodies is likely to be abolished soon, Narayana, Chairperson of Karnataka State Commission for Safai Karmacharis said on Tuesday.

Addressing presspersons after reviewing implementation of welfare measures for sanitary workers by BWSSB, Mr. Narayana said the issue is slated to come up in the next Cabinet meeting. “This follows a proposal submitted by the commission. The services of over 35,000 workers are likely to be regularised. They will get monthly wages of Rs 14,000 after the government takes a decision,” he said.

Another proposal to set aside 20 per cent of the SC/ST grants of 24.10 per cent in every department for welfare of civic workers is also likely to come up in the next Cabinet meeting, he said.
