CM to lay foundation stone for revival of Kandavara Kere on Monday

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

To resolve the long-standing issue of water scarcity in drought-prone Chikkaballapur district, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, along with local MLA K. Sudhakar, will lay the foundation stone for the revival of Kandavara Kere (Lake) in Chikkaballapur on Monday.

The lake rejuvenation programme was a part of the second phase of the Hebbal - Nagawara valley project. A total of 44 lakes will be revived in the district.

Spread over 330 acres, Kandavara Kere was once the largest lake in Chikkaballapur taluk. “The project will address the water crisis that has severely affected farmers,” the MLA said.

Along with Kandavara Kere, other tanks in the taluk are expected to be rejuvenated. “The water will flow into the lake from Bagalur via Jala Hobli. Desilting the lake is essential for the percolation of water through the gradients and increase the tank’s capacity. The farmers will not receive water directly. Once we allow percolation of water, the borewells will get recharged,” he said.

The estimated cost of the total project ₹970 crore. A total 22 tanks each would be revived in first and second phases. Mr. Sudhakar said he has requested the government to establish water purifying plants to supply potable water to residents of his constituency.
