May 14, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 09:27 am IST - Bengaluru:

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has said that civil and criminal action will be taken against land- grabbers and officials who helped developers construct structures on lakebeds and government land in the city.

Speaking at the ‘Meet the Press’ programme here, he said Opposition parties – BJP and JD (S) – have been opposing the demolition drive to gain public sympathy ahead of the BBMP polls.

“No matter how influential or rich they are, we will take civil and criminal action against builders/developers who have encroached upon government land. Similar action would be taken against officials who colluded with developers and supported them in constructing structures on lakebeds,” the Chief Minister added.

“Our government acted as per the recommendations of the A.T. Ramaswamy and V. Balasubramanian committees and the Supreme Court and the High Court judgments”, he added. As many as 4,052 acres of encroached land worth Rs. 40,000 crore have been recovered during the last two years, he said.
