Police created 24-km green corridor for transportation of a cadaver heart from one corner of the city to another during the peak hour on Saturday morning. Multiple agencies coordinated and the entire process, including transportation and transplantation of the vital organ, was completed in just 2 hours and 45 minutes. The live heart was transported from M.S. Ramaiah Hospital to B.G.S. Global Hospital in 20 minutes. Motorists, who initially thought the disruption in traffic movement was because a politician was passing by soon realised that a cadaver heart was being transported toit was for transporting a heart. On any day, it takes more than an hour to cover the distance between the two hospitals. According to Naresh Shetty, president of M.S. Ramaiah Memorial Hospital, a 21-year-old man was fatally injured in a road accident on January 1 near Jalahalli Cross. After consulting doctors in K.C. General and NIMHANS, the family shifted him to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital where he was declared brain dead on January 2. The brain dead patient’s mother is a vegetable vendor. She agreed to donate her son’s heart so that it would give life to some one else. The Zonal Coordination Committee of Karnataka (ZCCK), the nodal agency for facilitating organ donation, identified a 29-year-old goldsmith from Hooghly district of West Bengal as a suitable recipient in BGS Global Hospital.

The live heart was successfully transplanted by a team of 15 specialists led by senior cardiac surgeon Anand Subrahmanyam at BGS Global Hospital.Besides the heart, the liver, two kidneys and corneas of the young brain dead patient were donated.
