Train services between the city and Mysuru, the venue of the Dasara celebrations, were disrupted for around three hours owing to the derailment of the Bengaluru-Mysuru passenger train.
The train, which left the city railway station at around 9:20 a.m. for Mysuru, partially derailed before it reached Nayandahalli station.
The front wheels of the diesel engine derailed and the train stalled on the tracks at 9:30 a.m.
While officials hurried to clear the tracks, three trains — SBC-MYS Rajya Rani Express, the Shatabdi Express between Chennai and Mysuru as well as the Bagalkot-Mysuru Basava Express. Egihteen daily trains pass through the Bengaluru-Mysuru stretch.
Services resumed after the line was restored around 11:45 a.m. Officials said they suspected some object had been put on the tracks which led to the derailment. “We will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter,” said Bengaluru Divisional Railway Manager Sanjiv Agarwal.
Sources said the chances of objects being placed on the tracks were very high as the surroundings were filled with residential properties.
“The track was not heavily damaged. We repaired it within a few hours and train services resumed,” Mr. Agarwal said.
