The Technical Vigilance Cell under Commissioner (TVCC) in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has found that the civic body has spent taxpayers’ money unnecessarily on civil works and a report was submitted to in-charge Commissioner Siddaiah on Wednesday.
Randomly chosen
According to sources, the TVCC randomly chose one ward in each of the eight zones and looked into the works taken up between November 2011 and November 2012. The investigation was ordered following a citizen’s complaint that unnecessary works were being taken up.
The TVCC looked into 434 works taken up in Nayandahalli, Girinagar, Jnanabharathi, Manorayanapalya, Dasarahalli, Puttenahalli, Jalahalli and Kempe Gowda wards. These works — civil, asphalting and building repair and maintenance — were worth Rs. 53.08 crore.
In its report, the TVCC has stated that some of the works taken up were not required. It also found that there was no standard quality maintained and neither were the rules and regulations prescribed under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement Act followed.
Garbage
Meanwhile, Mr. Siddaiah directed the BBMP officials once again to set up dry waste collection centres in all wards, besides expediting identification of suitable land for waste processing units.
At a meeting with officials of the solid waste management department here, he asked the expert committee constituted by the government to shortlist the firms that had sent proposals to set up waste processing units. So far, 36 companies have done so.
Mr. Siddaiah said the services of the city surveyors could be used to survey the identified landfills. If any private properties are to be acquired, these must also be surveyed.
The survey report must be tabled before the council and later sent to government for approval.
Potholes
Mr. Siddaiah directed the engineers to fill all potholes within this month-end. Stating that delay would not be tolerated.
Earlier, he inspected the road leading to city railway station, Sampige Road and Okalipuram Road. Considering that these roads bear heavy vehicular movement, he instructed the engineers to repair the road, besides clearing the waste strewn on the road.
