Contrary to the results in three constituencies of Bangalore city, the Congress retained all the three Lok Sabha constituencies located on the outskirts of Bangalore.
All three incumbent MPs of Chickballapur, Kolar and Bangalore Rural constituencies emerged victorious. All three constituencies had witnessed a multi-cornered contest.Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas M. Veerappa Moily, who was riding a wave, thanks to promising drinking water from the west-flowing rivers to the constituency, got elected for the second time from Chickballapur by defeating BJP candidate B.N. Bache Gowda, a strongman from the dominant Vokkaliga community.
Like in the 2009, Mr. Moily’s candidature as well as his victory in this election, surprised many as he was not from the region and did not belong to any dominant community. He had defeated C. Aswathanarayana of the BJP by a margin of over 51,000 votes in 2009.
A record 7th timeIn the Kolar Lok Sabha (Reserved) LS constituency, Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises K.H. Muniyappa defeated K. Keshav of the Janata Dal (Secular) by a margin of 47,850 votes. Mr. Muniyappa is being elected to the Lok Sabha the seventh time in a row since 1991.
In Bangalore Rural LS constituency, D.K. Suresh, brother of Minister for Energy D.K. Shivakumar, humbled Muniraju Gowda of the BJP by a big margin of 2,31,480 votes.
The Congress was able to cash in on the discontentment of the people here over H.D. Kumaraswamy, who deserted the constituency and contested from Chickballapur. The admission of Channapatna MLA, C.P. Yogeshwar, and other local leaders helped the Congress to consolidate its vote in the constituency.
In 2009 elections, Mr. Kumaraswmay defeated C.P. Yogeshwar, who was then with the BJP.
