Authorities have instructed police patrol teams on night duty to shut down any ATM that is functioning without a security guard, burglar alarm or surveillance camera. The instructions were given even as Home Minister K J George reiterated the government’s resolve to force bank managements to follow security guidelines.

Speaking at the 17th Annual Limb Camp organised by Rotary Club of Bangalore — Peenya on Friday, he pointed out that bank managements were given adequate time to ensure adequate security at ATM kiosks. "We will not allow them to function till they employ adequate security," Mr. George said.

“The security measures are not meant merely to protect money in ATMs but also for the safety of ATM users. The safety guidelines are not new, but banks had not implemented them so far. We decided to crack the whip after a customer was attacked inside an ATM at NR Square. A deadline was set for the banks to comply. More time was given as per their request. However, despite this, security measures were not initiated,” he added.
