The wife of a soldier allegedly set herself on fire outside her house in Vijayapura in Devanahalli taluk on Monday morning while her seven-year-old son was playing in the house.

Neighbours took the victim, Kavita, 28, to Victoria Hospital where she succumbed to injuries on Thursday, said the police, adding that her husband was posted in Odisha when the incident took place.

At the hospital, she had allegedly accused her neighbour of harassment, passing lewd comments and forcing her to have a physical relationship with him.

Based on her statement, the Vijayapura police arrested the neighbour, Krishnamurthy, a fabricator. He was been remanded in judicial custody.

A case under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered, said the police.
