A 20-year-old habitual offender was allegedly hacked to death by an armed gang in Ramakrishna block in J.C. Nagar on Sunday night.

The deceased, Vignesh Vinayaka, a native of Tamil Nadu, had several cases pending against him.

According to the police, Vignesh was arrested by the police in a robbery case and had been remanded in judicial custody. A few days ago, he got bail and was staying with a friend.

On Sunday night, he was returning home with his friend after dinner when an armed gang intercepted him. While his friend escaped, the gang attacked and hacked him to death and fled from the spot, the police said.

The J.C. Nagar police have taken up the case. The police suspect old rivalry as the reason behind the murder and efforts are on to identify the assailants.
