In 2012, the interim report of a 12-member expert committee of the BWSSB to look for long-term solutions for water supply had suggested “tapping” other reservoirs for a permanent solution to the problem. However, many of the rivers, reservoirs suggested have become controversial battlegrounds.

The Yettinahole project (diverting water from the Netravati) has evoked protests in Dakshina Kannada district. The Mekedatu project is being opposed by Tamil Nadu.

The report had strongly recommended drawing water from Linganamakki dam, which is nearly 400 km away — around four times the distance from the Cauvery.
