Act against PU colleges lacking infrastructure: HC

PIL against 22 colleges disposed

January 29, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:31 am IST - Bengaluru:

The Karnataka High Court on Wednesday directed the State government to take necessary action against pre-university colleges that lack mandatory infrastructure as per the norms.

A Division Bench comprising Justice K.L Manjunath and Justice S. Sujatha passed the order while disposing two PIL petitions which complained that 22 PU colleges run by Davangere-based Chethana Education Trust across the State lack necessary infrastructure as per Section 4 of the Karnataka Pre-University Education (Academic, Registration, Administration and Grant-in-aid, etc) Rules 2006.

While fixing a deadline of three months to take action in respect of these 22 colleges, the Bench gave six months’ time for authorities to take similar action against other PU colleges lacking basic infrastructure. However, the Bench made it clear that action should be taken only after an inspection and providing an opportunity for each institution to explain their stand as per the law.

Section 4 of the Rules stipulates various infrastructure, like own building, specific number and size for classrooms, staff rooms, waiting room for girls and boys, water storage facilities, bicycle stands, etc.
