Giving care in low-resource settings with low-tech solutions for early detection of any medical complications should be the mantra of healthcare professionals, said Harshad Sanghvi, Chief Medical Officer of Jhpiego (an affiliate of John Hopkins Hospital).

He was delivering the Amadeus Shreyas Oration on ‘Driving Quality into Healthcare’ at the All India Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecologists (AICOG) 2019.

“Access to emergency obstetric surgery is critical for both maternal and newborn survival. Surgical care can be safely taken to most remote and rural settings. Preventive surgery saves lives and makes economic sense,” he said.

Emphasizing the need to be innovative in providing healthcare, Dr. Sanghvi said, “We must ensure that the fullest potential of skilled professional care is realised by ensuring the rights of healthcare providers. They have to be trained for the job they are expected to perform in a work environment that is supportive, and the healthcare professionals should be motivated with appropriate wages.”

Focussing on clinical governance, the doctor advised hospitals to have a dashboard of clinical governance and also conduct emergency drills to save lives. “The regime of clinical governance requires constant attention and strategic leadership,” he said.

Over 10,000 delegates turned up at the ‘Experts speak’ sessions to listen to experts from India and other parts of the world.

The participating doctors attempted another Guinness record by designing a 90-square-metre map of India using calcium tablet strips. As many as 22,000 tablet strips were used.
