Work on alternative road in front of High Court begins

January 03, 2011 10:55 am | Updated 10:55 am IST - BANGALORE:

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) has now taken up the much-delayed work on the alternative road in front of the High Court of Karnataka to facilitate diversion of traffic from Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Veedhi, thereby paving the way for the construction of the Vidhana Soudha Underground Metro Station. The alternative road is coming up on the lawns of the High Court for which a few small trees within the premises have to be removed. The alternative road in front of the Vidhana Soudha is in place and the stretch of Ambedkar Veedhi on this side is slated to be closed for traffic shortly.

The work on shifting the cast-iron fence in front of the High Court has been taken up at a cost of about Rs. 65 lakh. This 10-ft fence was built about two years ago replacing the old knee-height iron fences for enhanced security of the High Court building.

The alternative road will be built between the Golden Jubilee Gate of the High Court and Gopala Gowda Circle for about 500 metres. This two-lane road will not disturb the Golden Jubilee Gate as expected earlier, said BMRCL's spokesperson.

Vehicles from Police Thimmaiah Circle (GPO Circle) moving towards Gopala Gowda Circle will have to take a left turn at this gate and move on the alternative road before moving either towards Siddalingaiah Circle or MS Building. Thus, Ambedkar Veedhi will be closed between Gopala Gowda Circle and the Golden Jubilee Gate to facilitate construction of the Vidhana Soudha underground station. The spokesperson said the construction of the alternative road would be completed within 20 days, after which Ambedkar Veedhi on this stretch will be completely closed for vehicular movement.
